In our app you are able to get personalised information about your energy usage and where your energy comes from. All you need to is enter your postcode or address and it will give you a summary of your energy usage.

This helps provide a clear and concise understanding of your energy consumption. The app will tell you your total energy consumption, whether your energy provider uses renewable sources and its sustainability ranking (which can also be found on the website). You can get daily videos informing you about energy usage and short articles to further your understanding.

Teaching people the skills to upcycle unwanted household objects.

Many households throw out unwanted or out-of-use items which often end up in landfills. Given the option, people who are environmentally minded would choose to recycle these items. It would be great if there was a place where people could learn how to up-cycle and reuse or repurpose such items.", "solution": "

At Up-cycle Studios we give people the skills, knowledge and tools to turn old, unwanted items into new and improved objects. People can bring in items from their homes or businesses that are broken, worn-out or unwanted to be fixed and upcycled. We also source items like furniture from op shops and council pick-ups that we can use to demonstrate upcycling and then sell in our store. We partner with businesses such as bunnings to source materials that would otherwise be thrown away including half-used paints, wood off-cuts and used tools.

Profit made from our store pays for the resources we need to run our workshops such as tools and equipment, and our workshop facilitators. Any profits left-over get donated to charity.

Increasing access to clean water for rural communities.

Our solution is a portable robot that is placed in small lakes or rivers with a water filtration tablet. Along with this, it produces a high-frequency sound to scare off any animals so that they do not get hurt during the filtration and purifying process.

What the filtration tablet does is it clumps dirt particles together to the point where they can no longer float. This makes the dirt particles sink to the bottom of the water leaving the water purified and clean water at the top for drinking. This machine is equipped with multiple sensors to communicate to the mother device (a device that has an app installed) that tells the application on the device how clean the water is. (It would say in a percentage). The app would also show camera footage of the robot as there is a small camera on the front.

Through research it has been found that the average households' electricity consumption in Australia, contributes to 19% of Australia's annual greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, scientific research has concluded that the current greenhouse gas emissions have induced a climate crisis - global warming.

Interestingly, it has also been identified that the annual average household electricity bill costs approximately $1600 and is expected to continue to increase. The expensive figure indicates that Australian households consume too much energy.

Additionally, results from the Ernst & Young survey - completed by Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian households - suggest that approximately one in eight households have struggled to pay their electricity bills during the past 12 months. Further, numerous energy saving sources note that the continuous rise in unaffordable electricity bills may be a result of excessive energy consumption and using energy inefficient household appliances.

Thus, the average Australian households' excessive energy consumption has been identified as a problem.

Recycling household water while simultaneously generating hydroelectricity to increase sustainability.

The eco-vat will produce more energy to this target market as they have a higher consumption of water, meaning that they will gain a more advantageous use of our product. However, the eco-vat is also suitable for any household which has a substantial use of household appliances which use water including, dishwashers and washing machines.", "solution": "

The Eco-Vat is a device which will revolutionize the utilization of water resources in everyday households in order to reduce water usage and lower C02 emissions. How? The Eco-Vat generates hydroelectricity from the movement of water from the flow created during the recycling process, hence killing two birds in one stone; reducing water usage by recycling water from the washing machine and dishwasher, while simultaneously reducing household electricity usage via producing hydroelectricity. This will all occur within the vicinity of one main device; the Eco-Vat, a vat or box of which the water is directed to using pipes (as seen in source A).

Diagram B: The Impulse turbine- Contains a small pelton wheel which turns when water is funnelled into a pressurized pipeline with a narrow nozzle. The amount of electricity generated will depend on the total ‘head’ of the flow (the vertical distance the water is falling) and the flow of the water (litres per second), and the electricity output can be calculated using the equation: ‘[net head (feet) × flow (gallons per minute)] ÷ 10 = Watts’.

In this case, a washing machine utilizes approximately 70 litres per load. If we multiply this by 5 metres, assuming a 5 meter ‘head’ for each standard Eco-Vat system, and then divide the product by 10, it would then produce a result of 28.9 Watts of energy for only one use of the washing machine. Combine this with the energy produced by the dishwasher, this electricity will power electrical appliances within the household.

Here are the steps for how it works.

Water discharge from the washing machine and dishwasher is transported to the Eco-Vat via pipes
Microhydropower generators with impulse turbines are installed in the mouth of the pipes opening to the vat, as seen in diagram A.
Movement from the flow of water through from the pipes to the Eco-Vat turns turbines, thus generating electricity which is utilized for the rest of the house’s electrical appliances. (see specifics in source B)
After generating the electricity, the water is transported through pipes to the toilet, which can be utilized for multiple flushes in order to reuse water as opposed to wasting clean, fresh water.
Leftover water in the Eco-Vat that is not utilized for the toilet may be disposed of via pipes into the sewerage system.

The EcoVat is not only sustainable, but accessible for all, with for the first 3 months available to the public it will be subsidized by the Government as part of their climate change schemes, however, installation costs will persist. Despite this, the Eco-Vat exists as a long term investment, which will offset this initial cost, with a reduction in household electricity costs. Furthermore, once this product is successfully established within the market, we would like to extend the Eco-Vat to include the shower as an input source in order to generate more electricity and therefore increase efficiency.

With all the severe droughts happening in the world, the limited supply of fresh water is increasingly one of our most precious resources. It protects the Earth’s ecosystems and wildlife, improves food security, and most importantly, every person on Earth needs water to survive. However, our global supply of fresh water is being used up fast. This is due to a number of factors, including an increasing global population, changes to the way we live and work, and extreme weather events caused by global warming.

With the average Australian using up to 340 litres of water every day, the importance of reducing water usage, or managing it effectively, is becoming significantly important. However, many are unaware of exactly how much water they use, or in some cases, do not care, heightening the issue at hand. Making it easier to understand the environmental impact of clothes.

We have developed an Australia-wide organisation (that we hope can one-day extend to the rest of the world) called Infinity. Infinity is a company that makes it easy for consumers to learn about the environmental and ethical impacts of the textiles they purchase. The rating displayed on our tags and in stores is similar to the health star rating in that it represents an item’s fabric, ethical manufacturing, environmental footprint and whether it is, or can easily be recycled.

Infinity aims to make clothing consumers more aware of their products’ environmental impact. Our 5-star rating system is based on an item’s fabric, ethical manufacturing, environmental footprint and whether it is, or can easily be recycled. In short, it is a trustworthy representation of its overall environmental impact. This rating will be shown on a clothing item’s tag, within and outside shops and should be a point of pride to stores that their products have a good rating. Stores may also display their rating on our as well as their online platforms.

Our online survey where customers can quickly and easily vote for their favourite store to get an Infinity rating puts pressure stores to spend the mere 1 cent fee per item to receive an Infinity rating. All of the money raised will go towards Infinity and its purpose. We hope that by doing this, stores will change their manufacturing behaviours to become more sustainable and therefore get a higher rating, benefitting the store and community.

Infinity's aim of improving the consumer-producer cycle circulates around customers valuing sustainable clothing, and to encourage this we will release quick, catchy advertisements to capture viewers attention.

Part of our future strategy is to expand further and set up clothes bins, such as the ones you would see outside op-shops, to ensure that second-hand clothes are responsibly dealt with. Once we have these clothes, Infinity can compost cotton, resell them or take clothes to communities in need.

By hopefully incorporating our idea into the real world, we can make a difference in the way textiles are produced and disposed of, therefore helping the wider community and the environment. Make a sustainable choice. Make an Infinity Choice.

Many people don't understand the detrimental impact that their clothing has on the environment. We realised that most consumers do not know where their clothes are made and produced and how much of the production process had involved unethical practices that are harmful to the environment.

We found that customers would like a clear indicator of the environmental footprint of their fashion choices but this doesn't exist currently. In a recent survey we conducted, 10 out of 15 people said that knowing an item’s sustainability would influence whether they buy it.

Also, 95% of all textiles have the potential to be recycled but currently they're recycled at only 15%.

Creating awareness of energy usage by comparing it to distances traveled by Tesla.

Our solution is to educate students with posters around the school, and by comparing the energy consumption with the number of kilometers that could be travelled in a Tesla, and giving important hacks that encourage the usage off less energy such as 'turning the light off and opening the blind'. We are also thinking about getting a grant or becoming a part of the resource smart school, in an attempt to get more solar panels for our school.

Another solution is to target the teachers through having competitions amongst the different staff rooms on who can have the lowest energy usage, as well as reducing energy consumption whilst not at school, for example emptying fridges and freezers and turning them off when teachers and students are away.

Turning the ugly food into beauty products.

Re:model, gathers food that would otherwise be discarded from local grocery stores, all-purpose stores, and farms, and converts them into aesthetic, nutritional facial scrubs. The products have several benefits with statistics showing that certain foods that have qualities deeming it unacceptable for purchase are healthier for the skin. For instance, scabbed apples containing 20% more antioxidant components than apples without. These could be easily utilised by combining a range of nutrient-dense varieties into an all-purpose, or problem-focused product, like a face mask.

In our research, we found that the two concerns of using organic material are that they decompose quickly and that they may cause irritations for sensitive skin. To combat the issue of preservation, we found that Vitamin E in Grapefruit extract is commonly used as an organic preservative, which is not only easily sourceable but also contains anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it is gentle on all skin types. Regarding sensitive skin, we also found that apples and blueberries are hypoallergenic fruits that contain numerous facial care properties, meaning that designing a hypoallergenic, organic skincare mask would be a successful measure. The packaging which is made out of cardboard is bio-degradable and pleasing to the eye. Because we target local farms and grocery stores, transport costs are low. The products are distributed within the all-purpose stores as this gives them an incentive to provide us with the materials. We try our best to use all of the food waste. These include citrus fruits with hydraulic acid for hydrating purposes and vitamin e for skin rejuvenation. We aim to diversify the skin-care products in the future.

Under the umbrella of food waste, we found that a lot of farmers, grocery stores, and consumers throw away a large proportion of their food due to the food's undesirable appearance (bruising, browning, scabs). 7.5 million tonnes of food is wasted in industrial waste streams every year which we found unacceptable. Moreover, a large portion of fruit grown doesn't even reach the consumer markets as they are considered 'ugly'. Despite their appearance, these fruits have been proven to contain higher levels of antioxidants, and valuable nutrients. Utilisation of vertical gardens to decrease the enhanced greenhouse effect

Our final solution was to install revolutionary vertical farms, which utilize the precision farming technique and present a myriad of environmental benefits.

This aims to reduce carbon emissions as no greenhouse gases are produced during the production process due to the solar energy, and the plants within the greenhouses absorb over two times more carbon dioxide than if they were grown outside, meaning more carbon is biologically stored in plants instead of the atmosphere. This happens as the LED lights enable overnight growth, unlike outside, this means that the plants undertake more photosynthesis, rather than resorting to respiration at night. Plants also are less susceptible to decay and waste carbon returning to the atmosphere, as high-quality food is now being produced locally and reducing the complexities of the modern food supply chain.

Additional benefits from our project include:

“...using precision and vertical farming, where technology (powered by our solar panels) provides detailed readings on soil chemistry, water content, nutrients, and growth, measuring the progress of each individual plant. Because of this, we are able to significantly increase yields and reduce water dependency by 90%.
The greenhouse also utilizes hydroponics, which includes no soil, meaning nutrients are biologically injected into the plants. This process provides numerous jobs and further increases yields as the plants have smaller roots, meaning more room for plants.
This solution reduces carbon emissions in an aesthetic, innovative and sustainable way. Starting with implementing this in local communities, we aim to achieve our goal of reducing agricultural carbon emissions on a national scale.”

The solution is to run workshops in my neighbourhood, either in person or over zoom (due to COVID restrictions). The workshops will highlight in-season, indigenous and locally produced good to residents and demonstrate how they can be incorporated into everyday meals through cooking workshops. The workshops will aim to be as low waste as possible through the use of compost bins, recycled equipment and BYO instructions. The workshops will be advertised via letterbox drops, community Facebook pages and posters.

Repurposing unwanted food into environment regenerating soil

World endangered uses excess and unwanted food to create healthy compost. Putting the food wastage into composts we create healthy soil that we sell in packages. The profits go to fund the creation of compost bins for more schools. We work with schools to help them create a culture where students take ownership of the environment and participate in creating healthy soil from otherwise unwanted food. Students turn credits that they earn into rights of naming or colour-tagging compost bins after their classes or houses.

Reducing the amount of water we use in the shower, and redirecting the waste.

Our idea is to create a shower which limits the water we use so that we do not overuse. Also, the water that you do use will be stored and filtered so that it can be reused in many ways such as in your sprinklers.

The main part of our design is our timer. The timer is much more than a timer, it is a control system for everything! The timer is waterproof, has facts/tips about water that pop up, music to play in the shower and has competitions to see how much water you can save. How the timer works is that when you set a time limit ,which can either be from 1-30 minutes, the timer will give you warnings through the speaker and in the last minute the water will slowly get colder to let you know that it’s time to get out, then the water will fully turn off. After the water turns off you will be locked out from the shower for about 10 mins so that you cannot get back in. For instance, let's say you often choose a 30-minute shower, after you take a shower that is lower than 30 minutes 5 times in a row the function to choose 30 minutes shower will disappear and you will get a small reward. This will happen for every time setting so that you start having showers that are not as long and you save more water.

There will also be an app to connect to the timer which can show how much water and money you have saved. On the app you can access settings, competitions and make your own goals. This makes having a shower and saving water not just good for the environment but a game!
