Creating new homewares from old fabric

Reducing water wasted through cotton farming

Bob is a cotton farmer who cares about the environment and is quite good at budgeting. He is getting a very high water bill and needs to use our product to save money and to help his cotton to grow better.", "solution": "

Our solution is to make a sensor for cotton farmers to detect how dry the crops are so it will send an electric signal to a water tank and will open up a hatch and send water through a pipe line and the water will go through to the roots. This will reduce the amount of watering as the crops will only be watered when needed. The water will also go directly through to the roots so not as much water will be required. This will also save farmers some money in the long term as they won't be using as much water and their cotton will grow more efficiently.

Helping people be more environmentally friendly with their fashion

We are building an app to help people be more environmentally friendly with fashion.

The first version of the app will focus on teaching people how to patch up their clothes. This is an important skill but often something people don't know how to do. This is the freemium version.

If someone buys the premium membership, they can also learn about other topics. For example, our content will cover how to choose more organic fabrics, and how to make use natural dyes.

Customers will also be able to buy merchandise and kits to improve the sustainability of their fashion choices and reduce their environmental impact. This will include things like sewing kits and compost bins.

It is difficult to find the correct sizings online as sizes often vary between stores and products. Particularly due to Covid, this issue is becoming more problematic as the inability to try on clothes in store is making it even harder for people to shop. However, it is much safer to shop online than in person. Excessive online shopping to try and find the right size can also have a detrimental impact on the environment as it creates a lot of waste.

The first problem we found is an ongoing problem, and is the waste of clothing items throughout the everyday community. This is a huge problem and most families across the country and contributing to it.

The second problem is very relevant to right now, and this is the high demand for face masks.

To make clothing out of recycled material and save landfill.

I have come up with the idea of having clothes bins where you can deposit your unwanted clothes or materials. You simple would sign up on the app or website and have an account where you are given a unique barcode. You can then print off these labels which can be put on your bags of clothes. You scan each of your bags before depositing into the bin. From there the bags are taken to the warehouse where they are weighed and the points go into your account. These points can go towards buying something at the environmental shop or online. If you shish you can donate your points to a charity.

At the warehouse the clothes are sorted into different categories. So can it be sold at the environmental charity shop in good condition, does it need fixing? Could it be recycled into new clothes or made into shopping bags? Or even sold to rags for local businesses.

All products would be sold at the environmental shop which could also be online and other main stores Eg. Target might like to supply them.

Upcycling and re-designing old clothes for re-sale to avoid clothes wastage and help refugees.

We will run a social enterprise called Shinely. We will use our sewing skills to create a service where we re-design clothing so it can be upcycled. Clothing that is donated to us can be given a second life. We will take clothing and custom make new designs and use that to upcycle the clothing. Some of our profits will go towards helping Afghan refugees like us.

You can see an image of our prototype below, where we have tie-dyed a shirt and added our logo to it to upcycle it from just being a plain shirt the owner wasn't wearing to something we can sell. We got some great feedback from showing this to our teachers and other students at the school.

Making children feel safer

This social enterprise exists to keep children safe and make them feel more comfortable when they are out in the community. This is achieved through a product that can be worn by children which track their location and heart rate and alerts parents when they are in an unsafe situation. The product also features a manual help button which the child may utilise. 50% of the profits generated from the product will go towards charities that focus on children's wellbeing.

Student's don't feel safe walking home from school. This because they know there are dangerous people in the community. Our customers are the parents of young children who are often worried when their children are traveling to and from school and other areas in the community.
