At Maren Ya Kaung, we tackle the issue of access to and the price of native foods by operating a food truck that offers a diverse selection of Native Foods. Our mission is to raise awareness about Bush Tucker and its cultural significance through engaging and informative fortnightly Yarning Circles. These gatherings provide an opportunity for people to learn about traditional foods, their preparation, and their importance to First Nations cultures.

In addition to educating the community, we are committed to giving back. Any excess revenue generated from our food truck is distributed to First Nations organisations within the community. These funds help support the invaluable work they do in preserving cultural heritage, promoting education, and fostering community wellbeing. By choosing to support Maren Ya Kaung, you are not only enjoying delicious native foods but also contributing to a broader movement of cultural preservation and community support.

At Dreamtime Delights, we address the need for education and appreciation of Native Foods by offering a specialised home economics class/ program for First Nations students. Our program is designed to be integrated into the current secondary school curriculum, providing students with the knowledge and skills to prepare and appreciate traditional foods.

The course culminates in a collaborative final project where students have the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and culinary creations to the broader school community. This event not only highlights the rich culinary heritage of Native Foods but also fosters a greater understanding and appreciation among all students and staff.

Funds raised from this final project are reinvested into the school's First Nations program. This financial support helps cover costs and enhances resources, ensuring the continued success and expansion of the program. By participating in Dreamtime Delights, students gain valuable skills and contribute to a sustainable model that supports the preservation and celebration of their cultural heritage.

Our solution is going to be a watch that provides multiple things for you to enjoy eating healthy and being able to watch your health and food choices. This watch records your dietary intake, the amount of calories in the food you ate, metabolic responses and helps you choose what food you should eat next. based on that program. This watch will initiate a camera that will show the data of the food you took a photo of. Feedback will be made for the food and health choices you choose! It will loop again the next day. This will benefit them both through the direct, practical knowledge provided by The PlantBox and by providing families with a flexible, accessible way to cultivate healthy food that can be consumed by them.
\nIt is hoped that this will help address the issue of inadequate access to healthy food, driven both by geographic location within ‘food deserts’ and unaffordable healthy food options, and help contribute to greater practical knowledge regarding nutrition and growing food.", "momentum": null, "solution": "

This prototype aims to address a lack of practical, hands-on engagement with growing healthy food, provide children and their families with the ability to maintain a self-sufficient garden from which they can collect food and to increase.

*Please view embedded video for an in depth walk through and demonstration, or alternatively access it at https://youtu.be/ySCATDH0eiM *

The PlantBox

Students will be provided with a box containing all the materials needed to set up a self-sustaining garden to grow vegetables, herbs and fruits. These boxes will be given to students at two different points in their education: a smaller version in 2nd grade, and a larger version in 5th grade that they will use throughout the rest of their education up until year 10.

Intersection with school curriculum

The PlantBox will be utilised throughout a student's education and will be incorporated into various different subjects, primarily geography, science and PDHPE. In these subjects, there will be various different components that develop knowledge of the theory behind growing healthy foods as well as practical application of this knowledge, which will increase student engagement. It is hoped that students will share this knowledge with those in their family, whether that be with their parents, siblings, aunts/uncles or grandparents.

Throughout my ideation process, I identified two key issues that can contribute to poor health and nutrition choices.

The first problem was in relation to areas containing ‘food deserts’ where residents don’t have access to healthy food stores, or they are too expensive.

A food desert describes an area where there is an inadequate amount of healthy, wholefood stores, and a disproportionately high amount of ‘unhealthy’ food. Rural and lower SES areas are more likely to experience this phenomenon, based on retailers' perception that household finances of that area will not generate a high profit for stores. In the absence of these wholefood outlets, major supermarket chains perpetuate this issue by influencing consumer behaviour through discounts that favour unhealthy food; studies show that unhealthy food is discounted twice as much as healthy food, and that ‘sugary drinks make up approximately two thirds of all price-promoted beverages in any given week’.

The inaccessibility and unaffordability of healthy food then contributes to a disproportionate impact on people living in these areas, with higher obesity rates and overall health outcomes being worse compared to people who live in major cities (and higher socioeconomic status (SES) postcodes within these cities), as they don’t have access to healthy, affordable food and wholefood stores.

Secondly, a lack of hands-on engagement with education regarding healthy food choices can mean that although children are taught theory based knowledge relating to the topic, they do not they do not engage with this beyond the classroom. As a result, students are not as likely to be able to, or choose to apply their knowledge to their own lives in ways such as cultivating gardens and healthy food.
